For Patients

Preoperative Patient Intake

Please complete a patient intake form as soon as possible once your procedure is scheduled. An anesthesiologist will make arrangements to visit with you prior to your procedure if necessary.

Professional Fees

Anesthesia is a professional service that is distinct and separate from the services provided by your surgeon, surgery center, or hospital, in the same way the services provided by your family doctor are separate and distinct from the services provided by your cardiologist. You will receive a separate bill from your anesthesia provider for the services they provide you.

Our patients have the right to receive clear, transparent information on how anesthesia charges are calculated. Typically, anesthesia charges have a case component, and a time component. We provide a standard group rate, as well as discount rates for patients who pay in advance or on the same day of service. To see our complete professional fee structure, follow the link below.

Preoperative fasting instructions

It is essential that you follow these instructions to prevent complications or possible cancellation of your procedure. Anesthesia can be very dangerous if the patient has anything in their stomach at the time they are sedated. The stomach contents can regurgitate and enter the mouth and lungs, leading to a fatal complication.

The day before surgery:

Please eat light, easily digested food and avoid heavy foods like fats, meats, processed or greasy foods. Drink plenty of clear fluids (water, sports drinks, etc) to maintain your hydration.

Your last full meal should be before 8pm the night before surgery. Turn in early for the evening, and try to get a good night’s sleep. If you need a snack, you may have a small snack like banana, rice, applesauce, or dry toast with jam before midnight.

The day of surgery:

  • If your check in time is BEFORE 12 noon:
    • You may have clear fluids until 3 hours prior to your check in time (including black coffee with sweetener or sugar, NO DAIRY OR CREAMERS).
    • For example, if your check in time is at 7am, you would stop drinking fluids after 4 am.
  • If your check in time is AFTER 12 noon:
    • You may have a small amount of fruit, dry cereal, dry toast, or applesauce at 6am. NO MORE FOOD AFTER 6am.
    • Keep drinking clear fluids until 3 hours prior to your check in time. (including black coffee with sweetener or sugar, NO DAIRY OR CREAMERS).
